The Party of European Socialists today publishes ‘Twelve Terrible Candidates’ – a selection of conservative, liberal and far-right candidates that risk being elected to the European Parliament despite variously denying the holocaust, thinking that well paid white men are an oppressed minority, denying climate change, or holding other offensive or absurd views. Some don’t even want the European Union to help tackle unemployment! Others are standing for election while having no intention of taking their seat.
The PES makes no claim that these are the worst candidates – no doubt there are others even less in touch with reality.
The PES considers it important that voters have the chance to assess not only the candidates and parties that they can vote for, but also the European allies of their national candidates and parties. A vote for a candidate in one country boosts the influence of the whole group that the candidate will join.
The opposition candidates presented will contribute nothing positive to the European Parliament – either because they won’t be there, won’t speak or if they do speak promote some completely offensive or otherwise totally unconstructive view.
A full list of our own candidates is available on our website; to access it, click here.
The PES manifesto, adopted by all member parties a full six months before the elections, is available in over 20 languages as well as in talking versions in 9 languages.
