French MEP Pervenche Bères (Socialists & Democrats Group) presented a report on the effects of the crisis and how to tackle it. Mrs Bères outlined concrete measures to fight the crisis, focusing in particular on new revenue sources – such as a financial transaction tax (FTT).

The PES has long advocated that the way out of the crisis can’t be reduced to a series of successive cuts on States’ budgets but should be based on identifying new revenue sources and creating new jobs. The PES is also convinced that investment in green-technology has to be prioritized and cannot be sacrificed for short-term austerity measures.

Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs Pervenche Bères, presented an analysis of the causes and effects of the crisis. In order to tackle the crisis and to favour a new development model based on fairness and sustainability, she proposes a package of concrete measures: an FTT, fixed minimum wage and more investment in green technologies.
