France gives Hollande a mandate for growth

18/06/2012

The Party of European Socialists (PES) congratulates President François Hollande and the French Socialist Party (PS) on their historic victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections. The results of the second round of voting give the Socialists an absolute majority in the Lower House and reinforces their position as stalwarts of growth and progress.

PES President Sergei Stanishev stated: “Today, Hollande’s reform agenda has taken a great step forward. The strong results of this poll show that our progressive alternative to Conservative fiscal policies has the support of the people. French citizens have chosen a vision for France based on social justice and solidarity. The PS has won a key battle in France and now the fight must continue in Europe”. He added that; “this is a victory of values. France has given Hollande a mandate for growth, a vote of confidence that can redefine the direction of the European Union in the next five years. If we want to defend our welfare state, if we want to achieve a sustainable, fair economy, action is needed now. The French citizens have spoken: it is time for Europe to listen”.

PES General Secretary Philip Cordery was elected to the Assemblée Nationale, to represent French citizens living in the Benelux.

This parliamentary majority will be decisive in order to push forward an agenda of investment, employment and solidarity at national and European level.
