Stanishev thanked the outgoing president Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, stating that; “since 2004, every national party has felt the support of Poul. Now, I am honoured to have the opportunity to return the favour and serve such at such a crucial time, not just for the Party of European Socialists, but for all Europeans”.
In his acceptance speech Mr. Stanishev noted that; "the Conservative austerity only approach was undermining the very essence of the European Union".
