Europe needs to reduce its dependence on foreign energy and ensure that all European citizens are able to afford a basic supply of energy. Today the EU imports roughly 50% of its energy supply. We want to reverse this trend by increasing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy. Supporting the insulation of buildings, reducing energy use in transport and interconnecting Europe’s energy grids will tremendously better overall energy performance. In the transition period, during which we still depend on non-renewable forms of energy, the energy sources and the supply routes must be diversified.
