PES Council will take place on 2-3 December in Warsaw and the key word is Re:new! The Council will kick off a broad discussion on the future of progressive societies, which will be accompanied by an online debate on Re:new, the new PES interactive website. During the Council you will be able to follow all plenary sessions near-live via our website homepage and participate on the debate on Re:new.

Building a fair Europe by and for the people |

The hard times Europe is facing are as much a consequence of the conservatives' answer to the economic crisis as they are a result of the crisis itself. Strong austerity measures were forced on fragile states by conservatives and as a consequence these countries entered a downwards spiral. The PES Council resolution n°1 proposes a new European model that puts people first to tackle the crisis. Jobs need be created in order to relaunch the economy; green technologies have to be implemented to guarantee a sustainable growth and employment and social issues must be put at the core of EU policies in order to reinforce the European Social Model.

Re:new is the online platform created by the PES to debate the future of progressive societies. This is your space, where you can submit your ideas and exchange views on six broad themes with other activists, experts and members of the civil society. Our values, Social progress, Economy & Jobs, Environment, A fair world and Active citizenship are at the heart of Re:new and will guide the discussions until June 2011. Join the debate!

A European Employment and Social Progress Pact for fair growth |

The PES’ priority number one is to overcome mass unemployment and social exclusion, while promoting fair, green and smart growth. This is a precondition for economic recovery, and should therefore guide all socialist and socialdemocratic policies and actions. To achieve this objective we demand a European Employment and Social Progress Pact to be adopted at local, national and European levels.

Making Green Growth become a reality |

Europe is at a crossroads. The worst economic and social crisis since the end of the second world war alongside a rising threat of environmental degradation and climate change, have left Europe facing a double challenge: ensuring fair recovery and jobs while greening its economy in order to safeguard the world’s climate. However, there is one way to tackle both these challenges and turn them into opportunities: green growth. The PES paper outlines a clear strategy for green growth covering a wide range of policies (social, economic, external…) on all levels of EU governance, from local to European.

The Lisbon Treaty set up a strong trend towards more democratic participation in the European Union (EU). Today, both the European Parliament and the National ones have greater influence in the decision-making process and citizens have been empowered with the capacity of directly proposing laws. However, more mechanisms for participation is no assurance of even interest in European politics. Filling such a gap will require politicizing what is often seen as a purely technical debate. The key of this process lays therefore in strengthening the role of European political parties, and the PES has been the first to move.

On the afternoon of Friday 3 December, right after the Council, and until the 4th December, PES activists will have the opportunity to give their feedback in a PES activists Forum. The programme includes a debate with PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and a training on how to campaign online and offline.

Following PES Council, PES Women will hold its annual conference “My Body, My Rights” on 3-4 December in Warsaw. Co-organized with the Polish SLD’s Women’s Organization, the meeting will focus on the issue of Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. Through three main debates PES Women will look at the taboos surrounding Sexual and Reproductive Rights, the role of education and prevention in Sexual and Reproductive Rights and finally, the role of civil society and feminist movements in fighting for these rights.
