My third visit to the US this year took place thanks to the invitation as special guest to the 33rd Annual Parties of Your Choice Gala organised by the Women’s Campaign Fund, a cross-party initiative to support women to run for office. The Women’s Campaign Fund, presided by the inspiring Sam Bennett, has a philosophy to be summarised by 5 key words; Early, At all Levels, Bipartisan, Bold and Diverse. I believe this is exactly the same approach we need for European Women with just over a year away from European Elections.

Today marks the third European Equal Pay Day, which symbolizes the day until which women would have to work the following year to earn the same wage as men earn in one year. PES Women first fought for the creation of this European Equal Pay Day through its 2007 campaign ‘Gender Pay Gap: shut it!’ but six years later the fight goes on.

After my last visit to the US in October 2011, I am on the eve of a new visit to the US. There could not be a better way to start 2013!
Yesterday, on 12 December 2012, I attended the launch of the “Global Board Ready Initiative” database by Commissioner Reding and the European Business Schools/Women on Boards Initiative in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This online database provides a list of 8000 women who are well qualified and ready to become immediately board member. The criteria to be on the list are pretty strict and have been defined by publicly listed companies themselves.
This is what I recalled on 4 December at the lunch debate organized by the Parliament magazine together with Aviva entitled “Women on boards: What is the right approach for Europe?”
First of all, I thanked Commissioner Reding, also present at the debate, who has managed to finally introduce legislation at European level, despite the lack of support of some of her colleagues and the strong opposition of about ten Member States.
On 28 October in Galway, Ireland, Savita Halappanavar (31) died of septicemia after being denied an abortion which could have saved her life. Even though she was in agonizing pain and the foetus was not going to survive, the doctors refused to carry out a termination. This was based on the fact that the foetus’ still had a heartbeat.
Employment and growth were at the centre of the European Conference held in Florence, Italy, on the 25 and 26 October. This conference was organised by the CGIL, Europe’s largest trade union in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
