On 14 March the Party of European Socialists (PES) Economic and Finance Ministers met at the PES Headquarters in Brussels to discuss the PES strategy for effectively fighting against tax fraud, tax evasion and tax havens and other PES priorities such as the need to create a strong European Monetary Union that prioritises citizen’s needs.

From 8-12 May, young socialists from all over the world celebrated 150 years of the German workers’ movement in Dortmund. The festival included over 40 workshops in which wide-ranging topics such as social affairs, democracy, activism as well as equality and feminism were discussed. Panels, political discussions and speeches surrounded the workshops.

European Parliament President calls claims 'unacceptable'

Senior figures from the Party of European Socialists (PES) have today condemned the claims of Bulgarian ex-interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov that PES President Sergei Stanishev, who is also leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), used corrupt practices to secure his post.

PES Women President Zita Gurmai MEP addressed the Lithuanian Social Democrats (LSDP) at their party congress this weekend (Saturday 4 May). The Congress marked the first time that the Party had got together since LSDP’s election victory in December of last year.

On 1st May, Labour Day, the Party of European Socialists (PES) has called for the implementation of progressive incentives for European companies to improve the social standards of employees and their workplace. This statement echoes the origins of the Labour Day celebration and the importance of the eight-hour day movement for the recognition of workers’ rights.

Conference on Gender Equality and Europe 2020 in Dublin

The Irish Presidency hosts today and tomorrow (29 and 30 April) a gender equality conference in Dublin titled “Women’s economic engagement and the Europe 2020 agenda”. The event brings together national and international experts, NGOs and representatives of the Commission and the European Parliament. Conference participants include Irish Labour Party Member, Kathleen Lynch TD Minister of State, Department of Health and Department of Justice, Equality & Defence, and László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

The Party of European Socialists (PES) Presidency, held yesterday (April 25) in Lisbon, has issued a declaration calling for a strong Banking Union and a reliable and stable financial system. The declaration, titled “An effective Banking Union to protect European citizens”, calls for concrete action to be taken in order to “break the vicious circle between banks and sovereign debt”.

The event had the participation of over sixty high-level members of the PES family and was held at the invitation of the Secretary General of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) António José Seguro. Also attending was the First Secretary of the French Socialist Party (PS) Harlem Désir.
