PES ministers determined to push for more Social Europe

Progressive ministers unequivocally supported the need for a strong Pillar of Social Rights.

To fight gender discrimination, the Ministers supported the European Commission’s proposal to promote work – life balance in a changing job market and highlighted the need to guarantee an equal sharing of family responsibilities.

Luxembourgish Minister Nicolas Schmit, Chairperson of the PES Social and Employment Ministers Network, said:

“We need a strong pillar of social rights. With the pillar of social rights we will continue to promote an ambitious European social model that strengthens cohesion throughout the EU. Economic freedoms cannot prevail over social rights. We want to renew Europe’s original promise: a future of prosperity, equality and fairness for all its citizens, a Europe without austerity and unemployment – a Europe where women and men are put on an equal footing.”
