The world needs progressive refugee policies

The UNHCR’s World Refugee Day commemorates the strength, courage, and perseverance of some 65 million refugees who are currently displaced from their homes — the largest number ever recorded, according to UNHCR.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“Our policies and actions literally mean the difference between life and death for thousands of men, women and children. That’s why the right to asylum and protection must continue to be a cornerstone of that policy. We must equally continue to address the challenges and opportunities that migration brings to our citizens and communities.

“It is our moral and legal duty to show humanity and solidarity, and take our own share of global responsibility. Inequality, wars and climate change are the fundamental cause of migration, not the migrants themselves.”

The PES urges citizens to sign the UNHCR #WithRefugees petition, which so far has amassed nearly 2 million signatures. http://www.unhcr.org/withrefugees/petition/
