(Ypres, Belgium) Meeting in Ypres on the eve of the European Council, PES Heads of State and Government today gave their support for a more accountable and democratic European Union. The PES insists on a strongly progressive policy programme for the next Commission. The overwhelming message from EU voters is that they want change and that they want policies that address their concerns.

Sergei Stanishev took his seat as an MEP in the European Parliament today, and congratulated Martin Schulz for his election campaign on behalf of the PES. Sitting in the constitutive meeting of the S&D Group, Stanishev also endorsed Schulz’s nomination as the new Group President.

Following a joint initiative of the Hungarian and German S&D Delegations in the European Parliament, a room of the European Parliament has been named after Gyula Horn, former Prime Minister of Hungary.
12/06/2014 PES & SDSM discuss elections in FYR Macedonia
Senior representatives of PES Associate Member SDSM (Socialdemocratic Union of Macedonia) met with colleagues at the PES on 5 June. President Zoran Zaev and Deputy President Radmila Sekerinska, PES Presidency Member, came to Brussels for an exchange with Deputy Secretary General Yonnec Polet at the PES headquarters.

05/06/2014 Progressive thinkers reflect on the European elections 2014
On 4 June 2014, in the aftermath of the European elections, the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) gathered progressive thinkers and politicians from all over Europe for a day of reflection in Brussels. Deputy Secretary General Marije Laffeber presented the Europe wide campaign the Party of European Socialists (PES) ran together with its member parties and the main challenges ahead. ‘Our central focus will remain on jobs, jobs, jobs, growth and on democracy. The PES and FEPS will soon launch the first Europe wide Social Democratic training Academy in which these themes will be at the core’, Laffeber stated.
