Sergei Stanishev, PES President

The PES is the most modern, innovative, and democratic European Party. Yet we are always striving to improve our structure. Our ambition is to build a progressive and fair European Union for all citizens. By winning the European elections in 2014 we hope to turn that ambition into reality. Between now and 2014, we have a programme of action to help us acheive this goal. I am honoured to have been chosen to lead the PES during this vital period.

2013: a decisive year

In 2012 we saw a clear change at EU level, as it became clear that austerity-only policies imposed by conservatives were rejected in country after country. As new socialist and social democrat leaders were elected at national level, the balance in the European Council has begun to shift. Instead of the failed austerity prescription, progressive leaders have put forward the PES proposals for growth and jobs. As we are finally starting to implement an effective response to the crisis, 2013 will be a decisive year to get Europe back to work.

The PES way out of the crisis

The PES proposal is based on a simple concept: solidarity. We believe solidarity between member states, stable finances and strong social standards are key in getting Europe back on track. This is why the PES continues to prioritize a Social Pact and an Employment Pact: to regain the trust of the people we need to put people’s needs first.

Tackling youth unemployment: a priority and a joint campaign

A central part of the PES answer to the crisis is investing in young people. We have made it our priority, together with PES Women and ECOSY, to implement an EU-wide guarantee that ensures that each young person gets a job, an internship or further education at the latest four months after becoming unemployed.

Our goal: winning the 2014 European elections

The European elections will take place in a year and a half. The PES will work with Member Parties and with our activists to make sure that we go into these elections more prepared than ever before. Our manifesto will show that the PES is the only European Party with both the economic credibility and the social commitment that is needed to make sure European citizens can recover from this prolonged crisis.

The PES will answer citizens’ demands for more transparency from the EU. We will democratically elect a candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission and with this candidate at the head of our campaign, we will campaign under our common manifesto.
