Jan has spent her life working in and around the EU and the Labour Party, in London, Brussels and Cardiff. She served in Tony Blair's Government and was in Gordon Brown's cabinet as Leader of the Lords. She was then Leader of the Opposition in the Lords until she stepped down in May 2015. She is a now an active backbencher focusing on the EU, foreign affairs, education, young people, women, equality and health. Jan also works on diversity and inclusion as well as with many charities involving young people. She is chair of the People's History Museum and Pro Chancellor of the University of Bath.
