COP21 success: all countries must now deliver
The Party of European Socialists (PES) celebrates that an international climate agreement has been possible in Paris and congratulates all those who worked hard to achieve it, in particular our French colleagues, and the French President Francois Hollande who showed leadership and bravery in hosting COP21.
PES President Sergei Stanishev responded to the agreement:
“Paris marks a turning of the page, a new chapter in our shared history on this planet. With this agreement every single nation in the world - developed, developing and emerging - has recognised the threat posed to humanity by global warming and the need to act.
That recognition of the problem we all face has led to an agreement which will be solid base for further efforts to keep the world path to remain below 2 degrees warming. It is a robust floor for further action.
Now we have the agreement, the hard work really begins, and all countries must come good on their promises. The Paris Agreement gives us stronger rules on transparency and monitoring, so we will know if countries are acting as promised and what they are actually doing to protect the world’s climate. Every five years all countries will review and potentially ratchet-up their climate ambition.
Reaching an agreement in Paris was only possible thanks to the vision of the French Presidency of this COP. I wish to congratulate and thank in particular Laurent Fabius, the conference’s President, and the French President Francois Hollande. He has promoted an inclusive negotiation process that left no one aside. He has built trust and confidence among negotiators, which was fundamental for getting an agreement between 196 states with hugely diverging interests.
