Investing in democratic values: fighting populism and fake news
Populism is on the rise and fake news has become a reality around the globe. On all continents, progressives are facing the very same issues – issues that may have a devastating impact on democracy and on the values we have been fighting for, including gender equality, fighting discrimination, promoting rights of minorities, tolerance, freedom of the media, and social justice.
The Progressive Alliance and the Party of European Socialists ,in cooperation with the S&D Group in the European Parliament and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, organised a two-day seminar in Washington this week to exchange views on these trends and discuss how to counter them.
Twenty representatives from five continents took part in the programme. Delegations met with progressive leaders in the United States, including Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
On Monday 19 June, Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Washington organized a public event in the building of the trade union AFL-CIO, on the theme 'Quest for a new progressive vision in an era of populism and fake news'.
