PES: Britain’s parliament suspension is a selfish act of Boris Johnson

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“Suspending the British parliament because of the will of a self-absorbed conservative politician like Boris Johnson is antidemocratic and unacceptable. We totally support our member party, UK Labour, and its leader Jeremy Corbyn in their legislative efforts to prevent the suspension from happening.”

The PES has always supported the efforts of the UK Labour party to force the government to put the questions around Brexit to the people, either through a general election or a public vote. The strong reaction from civil society and all the opposition parties against parliament’s suspension proves that Boris Johnson and the Conservatives are dealing with Brexit by disregarding the interests of the British people.

“It’s not the first time the British people are thrown in to tribulation because of the Tories’ internal problems and selfishness. Let’s not forget that the Brexit referendum was called by the Conservative prime minister David Cameron in absolutely the same manner,” PES president Sergei Stanishev added.
