PES: Dangerous Human rights violation in Malaysia
The Party of European Socialists strongly condemns the detention of Howard Lee and other members of the opposition in Malaysia. Lee, who is president of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), is a representative in the State Legislative Assembly in the country and such an arrest is openly antidemocratic.
PES President Stanishev said: “An arrest of an opposition members who were defending the right of fair elections in Malaysia indicates that the government in Kuala Lumpur is abusing power and disrespecting the democratic process.”
The PES calls for immediate release of Howard Lee and the other arrested opposition members, including MP Anthony Loke, the Chairperson for Bersih, Maria Chin Abdullah, and Bersih Secretary Mandeep Singh.
According to the media reports the arrested members of parliament were not able to contact their attorneys is even more alarming signal, as far as it is a clear violation of human rights. The PES will keep monitoring the situation with Mr.Lee and the rest of the arrested opposition members.
