So far, over 40 people have tragically lost their lives and some are still missing. Tens of thousands of citizens have been displaced from their towns and villages covered by water, while an alarming number of homes, farms, schools and hospitals have been destroyed by the torrents and landslides.

Commenting on the situation PES President Sergei Stanishev stated: “I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families and relatives of those who lost their lives. My heart goes out to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia who have suffered as a result of the devastating flooding”.

After the rain fall stopped, the overwhelming harm the floods have done has come into light. The extent of the damages caused by this disaster is so severe that affected nations will require assistance in order to start the recovery process.

PES President Sergei Stanishev announced: “In difficult moments like this, the European Union must show solidarity and help all regions and citizens affected by the floods. I urge PES Member Parties to raise this problem with their national governments in order to make sure that the necessary aid is provided”.

The PES common candidate for Commission President , Martin Schulz, is visiting the region right now to express his solidarity. He accompanied the Prime Minister, Zoran Milanovic and met emergency personnel who are leading the recovery efforts in Zupanja.

The PES calls on the European Commission as well as all Member States to contribute financially to the rebuilding of public and private structures, road networks and also to compensate for the economic and environmental damages suffered by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia.
