PES congratulates Sweden's Social Democrats on election victory

PES President Sergei Stanishev has congratulated Stefan Lofven and the Social Democrats for their victory in Sweden’s general election on Sunday. Speaking from Strasbourg, Mr. Stanishev said that; “The next Swedish Government will be led by Stefan Lofven and by the Social Democrats. This is great for Sweden and for the European Union. Stefan will ensure that Sweden again becomes admired for its values of fairness and solidarity, regardless of background or privilege”.

After the 8 years of Conservative rule which has increased division within Swedish society, the Social Democrats have stated that they will now prioritize the fight against unemployment, which stands at 8%, and particularly youth unemployment which is 25%. They will also look to revamp equality within the school system.

Speaking of the European implications, the PES President said that; “With this victory in Sweden, the Social Democratic voice in the European Council continues to grow stronger. We must ensure that this new trend is reflected in strong progressive policies from the EU”.

The PES is currently focusing on the build up to the hearings of the new European Commissioners. The Commissioners, whose portfolios were announced last week are due to go before the European Parliament committees from 29 September.
