PES denounces the violence against Skopje MPs, calls for immediate response from law enforcement

Opposition MPs, including members of the SDSM party associated with the PES, were attacked in the parliament after the local police allowed angry protesters to break into the National Assembly building.

Fighting broke out after Talat Xhaferi was democratically elected as Speaker of the Parliament.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“This an unacceptable situation for a democratic country in Europe. The authorities and the police must ensure the security of Parliament and its legally elected members.

“All political parties should refrain from provocative behaviour and return to political dialogue in order to restore order in the country.”

The PES stands with its member party SDSM and its leader Zoran Zaev. We are convinced that they are on their right path to democracy, peace and stability in the country.
