PES shocked and saddened by Vienna terrorist attack

Europe will never give in to hate. Terror will never succeed in dividing our communities. The PES stands in solidarity with the Austrian people and the others across Europe who have been affected by the recent spate of Islamic extremist terrorism.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“This is an appalling attack against innocent men and women who were enjoying one last evening before the national curfew came into effect. Our thoughts are with them and their families at this tragic time.

“The PES stands in solidarity with Austria. Hate must never win. Terror must never succeed in dividing our communities. We must stand as one, as Europeans bonded together by our common values of respect, diversity and freedom.

“We commend the quick actions of security forces and medical teams in Vienna, who reacted swiftly and with bravery. All those responsible for this terrorism must be brought to justice.”

Last night’s terrorist attack targeted six locations in a nightlife area of Vienna, not far from a synagogue. It was timed to target people enjoying the last night before a national curfew was imposed as part of COVID-19 restrictions.

The PES extends its condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, to the people of Austria, its Austrian member party SPÖ and supports all the efforts of the Austrian authorities to bring the ones responsible to justice.
