PES supports PSD against scorched earth campaign ahead of Romanian elections

PSD has presented a strong programme for government to improve living standards and drive forward the recovery from the coronavirus crisis. The leadership of Marcel Ciolacu has brought the party closer to its European social democratic counterparts.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“Romanian conservatives from PNL are running a shameless campaign using dehumanising language against PSD that echoes the language used by non-democratic forces. They are violating the most basic civic duties of a political representative. They have no other project for Romania than insults and lies.”

The PES calls on president Ioannis to maintain his constitutional neutrality and mandate PSD with the task of forming a government, should the party come first on Sunday.

Stanishev said: “We want to see a clean election and we want to see everyone acknowledging, accepting and following the mandate of the Romanian people. We call on president Iohannis to be impartial and open the way for a government of progress and stability that can manage the COVID crisis and the economic recovery. We wish PSD success at the election this Sunday.”
