In a statement from his prison cell, Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, Thursday 21 March called for an immediate ceasefire with Turkey. During the 30-year fight more than 40,000 people have died. Last year saw some of the heaviest fighting in decades.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) warmly welcomes the statement and considers it as positive step forward towards peace. The PES supports this process and looks forward to seeing the positive developments that will follow.
PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I welcome this historic declaration. Now all parties involved should work together to start a new political process in order to find a sustainable and lasting solution to the Kurdish issue in a peaceful way. Only through dialogue and direct talks can the Kurdish question be solved. The people of Turkey deserve and expect this”.
