PES worried about the openness and the fairness of upcoming election in Brazil
Sending one of the candidates for president of Brazil to jail a few months before the elections might harm to the democratic process in the country. The PES is concerned about the perspectives for fair and open presidential elections in October.
PES president Sergei Stanishev said: “The decision to keep Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in jail while he waits for court ruling on his final appeal will defiantly cripple the election campaign of the Brazilian Workers party. Depriving one party form equal conditions to campaign might become a serious precedent for the democratic process in the country.”
