The Party of European Socialists is pleased that marriage equality will continue to be enshrined in the Romanian Constitution, after the referendum to amend it failed. The voter’s turnout of 21% was too low for the referendum to be valid.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

“The European Socialists and Democrats have always fought for LGBTI rights. And we will keep fighting for them in the future. We are the party of equality and equality before the law is a fundamental right, that’s why support the gender-neutral definition of marriage in the Romanian constitution. Romanians have shown that they stand by that definition and that they don’t favour any discriminations”.
