Strong performance from progressive candidate Šefčovič as Commission hearings begin

Commissioner-designate Maroš Šefčovič put in a strong performance which clearly articulated his ambition to deepen the bonds between citizens and the European institutions, as MEPs quizzed the prospective Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight on his suitability for the role.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

“Commissioner-designate Šefčovič is the right person to strengthen the relationships between citizens and the institutions, respecting the democratic and progressive traditions of the Union. He has the experience needed to guide through the reforms which will enhance law-making in Europe, and the drive to push forward the progressive agenda when it comes to the annual work programme. The PES strongly supports his candidacy.”

Maroš Šefčovič has the background and skills required to successfully manage an important Commission portfolio.

A former Slovak diplomat, Maroš Šefčovič has been a member of the European Commission since 2009, serving as the European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, and latterly as Vice-President of the European Commission for the Energy Union.
