The PES calls for full respect of electoral results in Albania
The Party of European Socialists (PES) calls for full respect of legal and constitutional safeguards in Albania. It is deplorable that, in a democracy, electoral results are put in question. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) should not have decided to recount the votes, as the counting process had been done under the supervision of both parties, and the victory of Edi Rama (Socialist Party of Albania, SPA) over Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lulzim Basha had been declared. Formal appeals have been filed by PES member party SPA.
Chair of the PES Task Force on Western Balkan Enlargement and MEP, Kristian Vigenin, said; “I am deeply concerned about the situation in Albania, which is protracting the pre-existing deadlock. The parties have to work together to find a solution for the country as soon as possible. Changing post factum the election rules to revise the outcome to favour the ruling party is unacceptable, the citizens’ will must be respected”.
The PES praises efforts made by Štefan Füle, EU Commissioner responsible for enlargement and European neighbourhood policy, since the last general election in May.
In this phase of the European integration process, it is fundamental for Albania to overcome the political crisis. The PES calls on the government and the institutions to acknowledge the conclusions and recommendations of the final report that the European Commission and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights will issue.
