On September 16th 2010, PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen met with the recently elected CHP Turkey Chairman Mr. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Discussions at the bilateral meeting focused on Turkey’s accession to the EU, the referendum on constitutional reform of September 12 2010 and increasing PES-CHP cooperation.

Commenting on the European Commission’s work programme for 2010 presented today, Party of European Socialists (PES) President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said that; “the work programme falls far short of the political courage needed to tackle the economic and financial crisis”. He added that “to face up to challenges of unemployment, social inequalities and climate change, the Commission must prioritise progressive growth policies, instead of continuing its obsession with fiscal consolidation”.

02/02/2010 PES Women President calls Commissioner Reding’s approach to the 15th anniversary to Beijing Platform a ‘missed opportunity’

At a meeting in New York with Commissioner Viviane Reding (responsible for gender equality and women’s rights), Party of European Socialists (PES) Women’s President, Zita Gurmai, called the proposed content of the “European Women's Right Charter" in the EC declaration on the Beijing Platform for Action (BPA) a missed opportunity. Ms. Reding announced the Commission’s intention to present an EC Declaration on the Beijing Platform for Action referring to the European Women’s Rights Charter.

14/12/2009 PES condemns Turkey's decision to ban the DTP

The Party of European Socialists (PES) condemns the decision taken by the Constitutional Court of Turkey on Friday 11 December 2009 to ban the DTP, one of the main opposition parties in the Parliament. As part of this ruling, 37 members and executives of the party were banned, including its leader, Mr. Ahmet Turk. Although 19 members of the party still sit in the Parliament, they have lost their official group status and consequently have only a marginal role.

12/12/2009 PES Women President calls for European Women’s Rights Charter

Yesterday at the PES Women Annual Conference Zita Gurmai MEP was unanimously re-elected President of PES Women. In her opening remarks, she called upon European Commission President Barroso to deliver on his promise to put in place a European Women’s Rights Charter that will enforce gender equality for the 21st century.

We can proudly state that we are the only European Party that has 20,000 grassroots activists from all Member States and there are even more than 80 local groups connected to the PES activists city group network.
