07/06/2012 PES President Sergei Stanishev states "Constitutional Reform in the Arab Spring countries open new era for citizens"
Today in the European Parliament a joint seminar on Constitutional Reform between the PES, S&D Group, GPF, FEPS and sister parties from the region Ettakatol (Tunisia) and Fatah (Palestine) was organized. The seminar was attended by PES PresidentSergei Stanishev and Hannes Swoboda leader of the S&D Group in the European Parliament and tackled very important topics on Constitutional affairs with Members of the European Parliament, member parties from Europe and the region and constitutional experts. Issues such as the separation of powers, ensuring social rights and women's rights in a Constitution, protection of fundamental rights and the role of religion in the Constitution were discussed extensively.
05/06/2012 PES Secretary General Philip Cordery meets with Mustapha Ben Jaafar, President of Tunisian National Constituent Assembly
On 5 June PES Secretary General Philip Cordery met with Mustapha Ben Jaafar President of the Tunisian Constituent Assembly in Brussels. They discussed the current political situation in Tunisia, the drafting of the Tunisian Constitution and the economic situation in Tunisia. Mr Cordery welcomed the important work of Ettakatol and its leader Mustapha Ben Jaafar in the democratic transition and crucial period for the future of Tunisia.
23/05/2012 PES supports Eurobonds as a “stability and solidarity tool for the Eurozone”
The Party of European Socialists (PES) has expressed its support for making Eurobonds a priority at the next EU summit (28 June). Ahead of the informal EU summit of 23 May, the PES Prime Ministers and leaders met in Brussels to discuss how to promote their growth agenda.

02/03/2012 PES welcomes Serbian EU ‘Candidate Status’
Serbian President Boris Tadic The European Council on the 1st March 2012 decided to grant Serbia official candidate status, furthering the progress towards Serbian Accession to the EU. The PES President,Sergei Stanishev stated that this decision was due to the work of the Government, the DS Party and particularly President Boris Tadic’strategic vision. “Each post on this path has been navigated by Boris Tadic and the DS Party with assuredness. Each request from the European Union was met. From the initial Commission assessment to yesterday’s Council decision, each challenge has been negotiated with a steady hand”, said the PES President.
01/03/2012 “Invest in EU economy, invest in youth” PES tells European Council
Ahead of the 1st of March EU Summit, the Party of European Socialists (PES) has called for investment in the EU economy and investment in youth. In an open letter sent to the European Council, the PES made a strongly worded critique of existing conservative policies. “Spending cuts, further deregulation of the labour market and liberalisation of the service sector are not the answers”, the letter warns.
24/02/2012 PES President praises Tadic’s domestic reforms in Belgrade visit
PES President Sergei Stanishev and leader of S&D Group Hannes Swoboda met with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister of Serbia Mirko Cvetkovic in Belgrade. The delegation praised the domestic achievements of Tadic’s government and the strong push towards European integration. The meetings took place ahead of the general elections.
23/02/2012 PES Women welcomes Danish Presidency gender equality priorities to tackle youth unemployment
On 23rd March PES Women held its yearly statutory meeting in Copenhagen. In presence of Danish Minister for Gender Equality Manu Sareen and Spokesperson on Gender Equality Rasmus Langhoff MP, PES Women welcomed the Danish EU Presidency priorities to tackle gender inequality.
22/02/2012 PES President Sergei Stanishev calls for a Renewed EU-Turkey Agenda
Twelve years after granting candidate status and six years after the start of accession negotiations, EU-Turkey relations are today at a virtual standstill. It is in the interest of Turkey and the EU that this process is reinvigorated. The goal is Turkish membership in the European Union. Accession must be an open-ended process with conditions, yes, but not with political vetoes. The European Socialist family is the political family most committed to EU integration and the enlargement process. Therefore the PES believes that it is crucial to launch a new EU-Turkey Agenda.
15/02/2012 PES Congratulates the leader of SDP BiH on the formation of a State Government
This week, after more than a year without a government, the new State Government of Bosnia Herzegovina was formed. The government has been formed with Ministers coming from the six political parties involved in the negotiations. The new Government also adopted a new state budget.
