16/04/2014 Martin Schulz discusses progressive values with Luxembourg Socialist Party
On Tuesday evening in Luxembourg, Martin Schulz, PES Candidate for European Commission President, set out his vision for the future of the EU. At a town hall campaign meeting organised by the Luxembourg Socialist Party (LSAP), Schulz enjoyed a great exchange with party members and supporters. After an introduction by new LSAP President Claude Haagen, Schulz joined lead MEP candidate Mady Delvaux-Stehres in a conversation with the audience.
15/04/2014 PES and Common Candidate praise Maltese PM on civil union bill
PES and Martin Schulz, PES Common Candidate, congratulate Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and the Maltese Labour Party on the adoption of the civil union bill. The bill will grant same-sex couples the legal protections, privileges and obligations granted to married heterosexual couples, including the right to adopt children jointly.
15/04/2014 PES President demands release of Palestinian leader on the 12th anniversary of his abduction
On the 25th of March PES President Sergei Stanishev met with Fadwa Barghouti, wife of Marwan Barghouti, renowned Fatah member and Palestinian reconciliation figure. Marwan Barghouti has spent a total of 17 years in prison, of which the last 11 years consecutively. The meeting took place in Amman at the Conference ‘A common vision for a progressive Arab world’ co-organized by the PES on the 24th and 25th of March.
15/04/2014 Banking Union: PES family makes sure that taxpayers will no longer have to pay for rescuing banks.
After a series of negotiations Europe is now equipped with a set of concrete rules and procedures that should be followed when a bank is in trouble. The creation of a Single Resolution Mechanism with a Single Resolution Fund is of historical significance, it reinforces the foundations of the European Union. This breakthrough agreement adds more safeguards on citizens’ money and promotes the sustainability of public finances. From now on it will be the responsibility of the banking sector to pay the bill and not of the taxpayers.

PES attended the Soc Dem Asia annual conference in Singapore 13-14 of April 2014. Soc Dem Asia brings together more than ten Asian social democratic and progressive parties.

During her visit to Estonia, Zita Gurmai, PES Women President met with Social Affairs Minister Helmen Kütt and discussed the worrying existing gender pay gap in Estonia.
13/04/2014 Power to women for European Elections in Pärnu; closing the gender pay gap!
Today, the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE) is hosting this years 3rd event of the Equal Pay Action Days. Between 9 and 21 April different actions and gatherings are organised to raise awareness and mark the Equal Pay Day in Estonia, which is the highest in the EU reaching 30%. Thanks to KADRI, the SDE women's organisation, the Equal Pay Day as well as an Action Plan by the government were put into place in 2011 and yearly specific recommendations and actions have been put forward to reduce and eventually close the gender pay gap.

The PES Presidency met today in Brussels to discuss the coordination of its European election campaign. Member parties made clear that they will demonstrate in the coming six weeks the clear and fundamental differences between the Party of European Socialists (PES) member parties and the Conservative parties of the EPP group.
