25/08/2016 High Level Progressive Summit in Paris: PES family united in reviving Europe

The leaders of the Party of European Socialists have continued with discussions on the future of the European Union after the ‘leave’ vote in the UK following earlier talks at a PES meeting on 29 June. The meeting took place today and was hosted by the President of France, François Hollande, at the Château de la Celle Saint Cloud, in the outskirts of Paris. At the beginning of the meeting, France’s President delivered a speech on behalf of the PES family in which he called for solidarity with the Italian people after the earthquake in Central Italy.

The Party of European Socialists is deeply concerned about the extent of the reprisals that are being carried out in Turkey. The PES clearly condemned the coup from the outset but European Socialists and Democrats are now worried about the current situation in the country.

03/08/2016 PES joins Europride Amsterdam to advocate LGBTI rights

On Friday, 5th of August, during the Europride in Amsterdam, the Party of European Socialists (PES) and the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) will co-host a conference on building towards equal rights for LGBTI in the EU member states. The conference, called “LGBTI rights in Europe, political answers to an activist analysis” is organised by Rainbow Rose and the Dutch Roze Network together with the support of PES and the PvdA.

The Party of European Socialists would like to express its concern about the thousands of suspensions in the military, in the police, in the justice system following the attempted coup in Turkey. The PES is worried the most about the debate on the re-introduction of the death penalty, initiated by the Turkish Government.

16/07/2016 PES condemns the coup in Turkey and calls for democracy to be respected

The Party of European Socialists condemns last night’s attempted coup in Turkey and welcomes the fact that a democratically elected government was not overthrown by military force. The PES and both of its member parties in Turkey - the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) stand firmly for democracy, the rule of law and the right of the Turkish people to express their will freely.

08/07/2016 PES calls for UN-sponsored global conference on migration and asylum policies

On the eve of the UN General Assembly conference on refugees on September 19th, the Party of European Socialists (PES) is calling for such a UN-sponsored global conference to be managed on a regular basis. Our political family kick-started this idea of having a global debate at a conference in Paris today, on 8 July. The official title of the event, which was hosted by the French Parti Socialiste and the PES, was ‘Refugees: Our Progressive Answers’. In June, the UN High Commissariat for Refugees, announced that the number of people forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution had risen to over 65 million at the end of 2015, compared to just under 60 million at the end of 2014. These figures underline just how important it is to act now. The PES believes that the migratory challenge urgently needs a global, common answer and is promoting a European response that fully respects the fundamental rights of refugees and follows the principle of solidarity. More than a legal commitment, this is our duty.

28/06/2016 PES Leaders: Article 50 must be invoked as quickly as possible

Prime Ministers and Leaders of the Party of European Socialists have agreed that there should be no delay before the UK begins the process to leave the European Union. Urging the UK and the EU to act calmly and responsibly, the leaders agreed that following Prime Minister Cameron’s resignation a replacement must be selected as soon as possible, so as to start the negotiation process at the earliest possible date.

27/06/2016 Istanbul Pride, you are not alone!

The Istanbul governorship banned trans pride and LGBTI pride marches twice this week for “protection of public order and security”. Activists who were banned from protesting instead gathered in several places in Taksim. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) activists, already exposed to many threats from nationalist and Islamist groups, were not protected from the attackers, but were in fact attacked by the police even though they had not gathered in a protest.

PES President Sergei Stanishev sent a letter of support to the UK Labour party about their campaign for “Remain” on the eve of the referendum in Britain. “The PES strongly believes that Britain must remain a full member of the EU and wishes success to your campaign”, Stanishev wrote.
