03/08/2016 PES expresses its concerns about human rights in Turkey
The Party of European Socialists is deeply concerned about the extent of the reprisals that are being carried out in Turkey. The PES clearly condemned the coup from the outset but European Socialists and Democrats are now worried about the current situation in the country.
27/07/2016 PES congratulates U.S. Democratic Party on nominating Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton has been officially nominated by the Democratic Party as presidential candidate for the November U.S. elections. Clinton became the first female candidate for the position from a major political party in the U.S., herewith breaking the glass ceiling. The PES congratulates the Democratic Party with this nomination. Hillary Rodham Clinton will run on the most progressive Democratic platform so far adopted by a Convention.
18/07/2016 PES concerned about Turkish power reshuffle
The Party of European Socialists would like to express its concern about the thousands of suspensions in the military, in the police, in the justice system following the attempted coup in Turkey. The PES is worried the most about the debate on the re-introduction of the death penalty, initiated by the Turkish Government.
16/07/2016 PES condemns the coup in Turkey and calls for democracy to be respected
The Party of European Socialists condemns last night’s attempted coup in Turkey and welcomes the fact that a democratically elected government was not overthrown by military force. The PES and both of its member parties in Turkey - the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) stand firmly for democracy, the rule of law and the right of the Turkish people to express their will freely.
05/07/2016 PES welcomes Christine Muttonen as new President of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE
The Party of European Socialists welcomes the election of Christine Muttonen as the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. Muttonen, a member of Austrian SPÖ and of our political family was previously a Vice-President of that Assembly. Since this year, she is also Special Representative for Central and Eastern Asia.
29/06/2016 PES welcomes the new EU Global Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy
The Party of European Socialists welcomes the new EU Global Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy presented by HR/VP Federica Mogherini. The document focuses on how to respond to the threats, including terrorism, and seize the opportunities of a more connected world. It calls for stronger defence cooperation, while also focusing on the inclusiveness of societies, on job opportunities and on the fight against inequality, both in Europe and in the World.
29/06/2016 PES condemns terrorist attack at Atatürk International Airport in the strongest possible terms
The Party of European Socialists condemns the terrorist attack at the Atatürk International Airport. PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the barbaric attack at the airport of Istanbul that has caused a horrible number of dead and injured. The sole responsibility lies with the perpetrators. I would like to send our condolences to the families and friends of the dead and to wish a good recovery to the injured”.
27/06/2016 Istanbul Pride, you are not alone!
The Istanbul governorship banned trans pride and LGBTI pride marches twice this week for “protection of public order and security”. Activists who were banned from protesting instead gathered in several places in Taksim. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) activists, already exposed to many threats from nationalist and Islamist groups, were not protected from the attackers, but were in fact attacked by the police even though they had not gathered in a protest.

Today in Brussels the PES Presidency discussed its position about SMER, the PES member party in Slovakia, the upcoming progressive conference on refugees in Paris and latest developments in monetary policies.
16/06/2016 HDP leader Demirtas meets PES to discuss lifting of immunity in Turkey
Selahattin Demirtas, leader of HDP Turkey (PES member party) today held an exchange of views with the PES Presidency on the situation in Turkey. They discussed the recent decision of the Turkish Parliament to permit the lifting of parliamentary immunity from prosecution of a large number of Members of Parliament, the situation in South East of Turkey, and the EU-Turkey agreement. The Presidency expressed its strong support for the HDP and their leader and their opposition against lifting the immunity of parliamentarians. The Presidency is deeply concerned by the authoritarian path taken by President Erdogan and calls for of the Kurdish peace process to be restarted. The PES will continue to follow very closely the evolution of the situation in Turkey.
