PES Secretary General Achim Post stated:
“The conviction of these 43 NGO workers is a shocking and appalling attack to civil society freedom in Egypt. It comes as a contradiction of the international commitment of this government to give citizens’ organizations liberty to act in the country and raises the question of the methods the government is using to restrain civil society freedom. It is inacceptable that two years after overthrowing a dictator, Egyptians should endure a regime that tries to again control and restrict civil society. I call on President Morsi to ensure that the right to actively participate in the society is fully respected in Egypt.”
