In memoriam: Michel Rocard
The PES sends its PS France comrades its deepest condolences on the death of Michel Rocard. European social democracy lost one of its most prominent figures. Mr. Rocard played a major role leading the French government between 1988-91 and left a strong legacy with the adoption of the minimum income (Revenu Minimum d’Insertion, RMI). Later on he became the First Secretary of the Parti Socialiste, the first to be elected by Congress delegates.
We will remember him for the great European he was. He had been a key figure, as a long-serving MEP and later on, fighting for more European integration, for a stronger political Europe and for a Union that listens to its citizens.
His involvement within our European political family was precious, and led him to take over the role of coordinating the work on economic policy with a view to adopt a common manifesto for the first-ever direct European elections in 1979.
During the PES Leaders' meeting this Thursday, the Leaders will hold a minute of silence in memory of Michel Rocard.
