Journalists imprisoned in Egypt must receive fair trial
Sergei Stanishev, the President of the Party of European Socialists has today called for journalists Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed to receive fair trials. The verdict on their retrial will be announced next Thursday 30 July.
‘Al Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed risk receiving 10 year prison sentences when they hear the verdict of their trial next Thursday. Their charges of terrorism and belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, are causes of grave concern for us and I call on the Egyptian government to ensure they are afforded a fair trial and all of the rights which the Egyptian constitution guarantees them.’
‘Journalism is not a crime, and should not be punishable with a prison sentence. Press freedom is a key tool for ensuring a healthy democracy and we trust that the Egyptian government will make sure that members of the press do not feel threatened or limited.’
