PES commends decision to grant Nobel Peace Prize to Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet

PES delegation meets UGTT

Today the Nobel peace Prize was awarded to the quartet of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers.

The PES applauds this decision, and wants to emphasise the important role played by its sister party Ettakatol, and notably President of the Constituent Assembly Mustapha Ben Jaafar, in promoting peace and dialogue in Tunisia.

Sergei Stanishev, PES President responded to the announcement:

'From the onset of the Arab Spring, the PES has been very involved in the region. We have followed the developments in Tunisia closely, and maintain a close relationship with one of the key players of the Quartet, the UGTT. Sadly, Tunisia remains the only example of a positive transition, in a region plagued by wars and conflict. The Quartet has truly set an example by encouraging dialogue with all players in the country.’
