PES condemns attacks in Tunis
"We are deeply saddened and shocked by the horrid attacks that took place in Tunis today. We want to send our sincerest condolences to the families of the victims involved", says PES President Sergei Stanishev. "Tunisia has set a unique example in a region plagued by civil wars and infighting. It is the only country that managed to transform into a real democracy after the Arab uprisings started there at the end of 2010. We wish to express support and solidarity for all the Tunisian political forces, government and opposition, that invested their energy to turn their country into a true democracy".
"By attacking first the Parliament and then the adjacent Bardo Museum the terrorists clearly targeted the main Tunisian symbols of democracy and culture. We will show our defiance by continuing to support more democracy and more culture. The climate of fear they wish to install will not prevail", continues PES Deputy Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck. "This tragic event shows once again that the threat of fanatic and criminal terrorism affects us all, everywhere. We welcome High Representative Federica Mogherini’s initiative to step up efforts to provide more security and stability in the wider Mediterranean".
A PES Delegation will travel to Tunis this coming Sunday. They will use this occasion to show solidarity to the people of Tunisia and partners in the region.
