PES condemns savage murder of Egyptian Social Democratic party official
The Party of European Socialists has today condemned the savage murder of Yorsi Al-Masri in Egypt this weekend. Mr. Al-Masri, who was the Alexandria region press officer for the Egyptian Social Democrats (a PES Observer Party), was brutal set upon by a mob armed with sticks.
PES Secretary General Achim Post stated that, “the death of Yorsi Al-Masri is a tragic outcome of a system that has lost credibility and legitimacy. It is time for a radical shift in attitude and in direction from the Egyptian authorities, starting with a clearly independent criminal process to bring the attackers to justice. There is a serious risk of escalation of the political situation. It is time for the President to understand that his responsibility is to the Egyptian people and to society, rather than to simply try to hold on to the levers of power ”.
Mr. Post sent the condolences of PES Member Parties to the family of Mr. Al-Masri, through the leader of ESDP, Mohamed Abou El-Ghar.
