Welcoming the result, PES President Sergei Stanishev said:

"Europe’s socialists and democrats are delighted at the decision of the Romanian people to elect a progressive, social democratic party to lead the country.
"I now hope Romania's new government can be formed as soon as possible, certainly before the end of 2016, to ensure continued stability and to allow the PSD to begin implementing its programme."

The PSD was supported by the Party of European Socialists, with both a joint event and a PES activists’ conference in Romania in the run-up to the elections. PES President Stanishev visited Romania during the campaign, attending a PSD event on youth, education and employment.
