Hillary Clinton has been officially nominated by the Democratic Party as presidential candidate for the November U.S. elections. Clinton became the first female candidate for the position from a major political party in the U.S., herewith breaking the glass ceiling. The PES congratulates the Democratic Party with this nomination. Hillary Rodham Clinton will run on the most progressive Democratic platform so far adopted by a Convention.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said: "European Socialists and Democrats are promoting gender equality since forever. Hillary Clinton is the most qualified presidential candidate. The fact that she is the first female candidate with such a chance to win the elections will open the door to future female candidates. The Democratic Party's official nomination of Hillary Clinton is a major step towards gender equality. We watched history being made."

PES Women President Zita Gurmai said: "This is a great day for the women all over the world. The PES women moto: "All Women all rights" today received a new, more powerful meaning."

The delegates taking part in the Democratic convention, currently ongoing in Philadelphia, voted yesterday. On Thursday, Hillary Clinton is expected to formally accept the nomination.

Deputy Secretary Generals Marije Laffeber and Giacomo Filibeck are representing the PES at the Convention in Philadelphia. The Party of the European Socialists is among the international guests of the event.
