PES congratulates negotiators on historic nuclear deal with Iran
After months of negotiations, the P5+1 countries (US, UK, France, Russia, China, Germany) and Iran agreed on a nuclear deal today. 'In these challenging and dangerous times, we want to thank the negotiating partners for their political determination to identify new grounds for cooperation' says PES President Sergei Stanishev. 'After 12 years of insecurity about Iran's nuclear programme, we managed to avert a worst case scenario. This opens a whole new chapter for dialogue, which is no less than historic.'
'The negotiations did not start under the best circumstances. In spite of scepticism and many obstacles along the way, we have to acknowledge that the discrete diplomacy of the EU is bearing fruit.'
'The PES would like to congratulate EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, for her tremendous efforts in facilitating the talks and striking the deal. France and Germany Foreign Ministers also deserve praise for the crucial role they have both played to make this agreement happen.'
Deputy Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck adds "In a time where the European project is under a lot of scrutiny, it's important to recognise the efforts of the EU and its member states in redefining international relations and diffusing tensions that have existed for over a decade".
