PES deeply saddened by the death of former PSOE leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba
The Party of European Socialists is deeply saddened by the death of Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, a former leader of PSOE and a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of Spain, at the age of 67.
He was a long-standing member of the party and fought tirelessly to bring about a fairer, pro-European Spain.
The PES President Sergei Stanishev and the PES Common Candidate Frans Timmermans have expressed their deepest condolences to PSOE in the name of our entire political family.
As an interior minister, Alfredo played an essential role in ending decades of terrorism and bringing peace to Spain. As a leader of PSOE, he always put progressive ideas first and built majorities through dialogue.
He put his brilliant intelligence at the service of his party and his country. His contribution to our political family will be sorely missed.
