PES leader condemn violence against opposition parties in Venezuela electoral campaign
Luis Miguel Díaz, Leader of one of the Venezuelan opposition parties ‘Acción Democratica’ in Guarico state, was shot dead last night during a campaign rally in Altagracia de Orituco, Venezuela. Less than two weeks before the parliamentary elections of 6 December, this is a serious act of electoral violence in addition to other attacks committed against opposition leaders in the past weeks.
Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev stated: “We are very concerned and strongly condemn the killing of Luis Miguel Díaz, who was sharing the stage at a campaign rally with Lilian Tintori (wife of Lepoldo López – the imprisoned leader of another opposition party - Voluntad Popular). We are repulsed by any act of violence that could affect free, fair and democratic elections in Venezuela.
I call on the Venezuelan authorities to urgently carry out an inquiry on this cruel assassination in order to avoid impunity for this action, and the PES strongly encourages all political actors of Venezuela to contribute to the maintenance of a climate of peace, harmony and dialogue in the election campaign and beyond.”
