PES supports Partido Socialista in Portuguese Polls
On Sunday 4 October Portugal will hold a general election. The Partido Socialista has campaigned hard and the parties are very close as voters go to the polls. Sergei Stanishev - President of the Party of European Socialists - attended the launch of the campaign to support the Partido Socialista. As the polls near, he added:
'During the past four years of conservative rule, more than 300.000 jobs were destroyed and thousands of families saw their income severely reduced. After Portugal suffered so badly during the global economic crisis the remedies of this government have inflicted further pain through harsh and unnecessary austerity programmes.'
'Portugal needs change and that change is called António Costa. As leader of the Socialist Party, is the man who can ensure a prosperous, more stable future for Portugal. He can bring back hope to a whole generation that is being forced to leave the country in search of a job and a decent life.’
‘Antonio Costa attends the PES Leaders meetings and has shown himself to be a European Statesman of the highest degree. I urge Portuguese people to vote for progress, vote for the Partido Socialista, and to vote for Antonio Costa to lead Portugal forward!’
