PES women calls for action against violence

The Party of European Socialists has today united women and men across Europe on the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. With a shocking seven women a day still dying from male domestic violence, there is much still to be done to address this grave problem. Women and men from member parties, activists and members from across Europe have formed shapes of white ribbons – the international symbol of the day.

PES women, which unites progressive women’s organizations from across Europe has today called for three measures to tackle violence against women:

  1. A European Year to End Violence Against Women
  2. For the EU to take action to protect women from violence by Ratifying the Istanbul Convention [1]
  3. To use international law to protect women from violence by proposing an EU Framework Directive combating violence against women

Zita Gurmai, President of PES women said:

‘We must see an end to the sickening levels of violence against women. The fact that 99% of women experience street harassment tells us that there is still an enormous amount of work to be done.

The European Commission may say it doesn’t tolerate violence, but it is time for action, not words.’
