This is a flagrant violation of the long-held consensus to isolate far-right parties in the German Federal Republic.
The PES finds this precedent a threat to democracy.
PES Secretary General Achim Post, MdB said:
“Those who cooperate with Höcke’s far-right AfD, either openly or behind closed doors, are responsible for breaking one of the biggest political taboos in the history of the German Federal Republic.”
PES President Sergei Stanishev said:
“We cannot expect responsible behaviour from the far-right, but we would expect that from parties that claim to be centrist. Trading the protection of the democratic institutions for short political gain is wrong and will backfire.”
