The PES Candidate to be the next European Commission President answered questions from the studio audience for 90 minutes, ahead of the European elections on 23-26 May.
A clear choice is available to European and German voters in these elections, and tonight’s debate showed two differing visions of the European Union.

Tax: Alexa, when will Amazon finally pay taxes?
English:
“I do not know if anyone here has Alexa at home? I would ask her, “Alexa, when will Amazon finally pay taxes?” They are paying nothing. A colleague of mine, Andreas Schieder, had a look at the profits Starbucks is making in Austria. He said they have a turnover of about 800 million euros per year. In the year in which he checked that, they paid only 800 euros in taxes. There’s a pub in his area, he went there and asked how much tax they paid. The owner answered, this year: 8000 euros. It’s almost impossible to believe that. That’s so unfair. We have to change that as quickly as possible.”
German:
“Ich weiß nicht ob jemand hier Alexa zu Hause hat? Da würde ich mal fragen, „Alexa, wann wird Amazon endlich Steuern zahlen?“ Die zahlen ja nichts. Ein Kollege von mir, der Andi Schieder, der hat mal nachgeschaut was Starbucks in Österreich für Gewinne macht. Der hat gesagt die haben ungefähr einen Umsatz von 800 Millionen Euro im Jahr. In dem Jahr, in dem er das überprüft hat, haben die 800 Euro an Steuern gezahlt. Er is dann zu einer Kneipe in seiner Gegend gegangen und hat gefragt wieviele Steuern habt ihr denn gezahlt? Da hat der Inhaber gesagt, in diesem Jahr: 8000 Euro. Also das kann man nicht mehr vermitteln. Das ist so ungerecht. Das muss man schnellstens ändern.”
European values: a Union based on values
English:
“The EU institutions are only instruments in the hands of citizens. If they do something with it, they can create something beautiful. If they are indifferent and let it fall, then it breaks. Then we can do nothing more. Well, we have to make it clear that if they are committed to the EU and the European community in the classical sense – that we belong together, that we will grow together more – if they are committed to that, then we can do it. Then we will really have a Union based on values. Then we will also be strong in the world. If we fail to do that, then I’m worried about the EU.”
German:
“Die EU-Institutionen sind nur Instrumente in den Händen von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern. Wenn sie es benutzen, können sie etwas Wunderbares erschaffen. Wenn sie gleichgültig sind und es fallen lassen, dann geht es kaputt. Dann können wir auch nichts mehr tun. Also, wir müssen deutlich machen, dass wenn sie sich zur EU bekennen und zur europäischen Gemeinschaft im klassischen Sinne – dass wir zusammengehören, dass wir immer weiter zusammenwachsen – wenn sie sich dazu bekennen, dann werden wir das schaffen. Dann werden wir wirklich eine auf Werten basierende Union haben. Dann werden wir auch in aller Welt stark dastehen. Wenn wir das nicht schaffen, dann bange ich um die EU.”
Sustainability: We have to act now. If we wait another five years, we will lose

“The Commission President needs to become personally responsible for climate protection, for the transition of the economy, also for social concerns. We have to act now. If we wait another five years, we will lose. We have seen in the European Parliament over the past five years that it works well with the Left, that it works well with the Greens, that it works well with us – the NGOs have ascertained that. But the EPP are rather dinosaurs on these issues. And that really needs to change now.”
German:
“Der Kommissionspräsident muss persönlich verantwortlich sein für Klimaschutz, für den Wandel der Wirtschaft, auch für soziale Belange. Das müssen wir jetzt machen. Wenn wir noch fünf Jahre warten, haben wir verloren. Wir haben in den letzten fünf Jahren im Europäischen Parlament gesehen, dass es mit den Linken gut klappt, dass es mit den Grünen gut klappt, dass es auch mit uns gut klappt – das haben die NGOs festgestellt. Aber die EVP sind eher Dinos bei diesen Fragen. Und das muss sich jetzt wirklich ändern.”
Gender equality: It’s time for equal pay
English:
“We only have 28 members in the commission. If 14 are women, that’s great. But these are only 14 European women, we have 250 million women [in Europe] and they also want equality. They also want equal pay”
German:
“Wir haben nur 28 Mitglieder in der Kommission. Wenn wir da 14 Frauen haben, ist das schon prima. Aber das sind nur 14 europäische Frauen, wir haben 250 Millionen Frauen [in Europa] und die wollen auch Gleichberechtigung. Die wollen auch gleichen Lohn“
Support for the unemployed: We are talking about European unemployment RE-insurance
English:
“We are talking about a European unemployment RE-insurance. Olaf Scholz has made this proposal. This means that we set up a fund that each member state pays in. And when it comes to an economic crisis in one country, then we do not force this country to cut back on social spending and unemployment benefits. The right-wing extremists have become so strong in these countries, because the social misery has grown in the crisis. We can prevent this by such a re-insurance. That would be a wonderful European project if we did that. And if that country is doing better again, the money will come back to this fund. This is real European solidarity and not at the expense of other citizens.”
German:
“Wir reden über eine europäische ArbeitslosenRÜCKversicherung. Olaf Scholz hat diesen Vorschlag gemacht. Das heißt, wir legen einen Fonds auf und jeder Mitgliedsstaat zahlt in diesen Fonds ein. Und wenn es dann in einem Land zu einer wirtschaftlichen Krise kommt, dann zwingen wir dieses Land nicht dazu, bei den Sozialausgaben und beim Arbeitslosengeld zu kürzen. Die Rechtsextremen sind doch so stark geworden in diesen Ländern, weil das soziale Elend in der Krise gewachsen ist. Dem können wir vorbeugen mit so eine Rückversicherung. Das wäre doch ein wunderbares europäisches Projekt, wenn wir das machen. Und wenn es diesem Land dann wieder besser geht, dann kommt das Geld wieder zurück in diesen Fonds. Das ist wirklich europäische Solidarität und nicht auf Kosten der anderen Bürgerinnen und Bürger.”
