Impeachment in Brazil: A very dangerous precedent

PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “This is very bad news for Brazil and for democracy in Latin America. Brazil was a prime example of a stable democracy on the continent. This impeachment procedure is a very serious precedent, it will increase institutional instability and it may lead to a constant clash of legitimacies within the state.”

Stanishev also praised the work of Rousseff – the first woman president of Brazil – and of the Brazilian Workers’ Party PT: “In the 13 years of PT rule, millions were saved of poverty and the country’s profile raised on the global stage. The impeachment is a result of conservative parties abusing a democratic instrument to remove a democratically legitimised president from office.”

The PES calls on all democratic forces in Brazil to establish a process of dialogue and to keep alive the democratic processes in the country.
