PES welcomes progressive government in Sweden

Under Stefan Löfven’s leadership, Sweden will stay on a progressive path based on democracy and people’s equal value. The new government will work for a safer, stronger society.

At the Swedish general election in September 2018 the Social Democrats came out top, securing 1.8 million votes. After months of political deadlock, the Social Democrats secured a deal with the Greens, Liberals and Centre Party. Stefan Löfven was today voted in as Prime Minister, dashing the ambition of the Swedish far-right to influence the administration.

PES President Sergei Stanishev congratulated Prime Minister Löfven:

“I would like to congratulate Stefan on securing a second term as Prime Minister of Sweden. Today is a victory for the Social Democrats and a positive step for the country. Stefan has been a champion for a fairer society in Sweden and across Europe. He is at the forefront of the PES’s fight to put Social Europe higher on the EU agenda, hosting the Gothenburg Summit for fair jobs and growth in 2017 with the EU Commission.

“Today’s vote in the Swedish Parliament continues the success story of the Swedish social model and points towards a centre-left trend for the upcoming general elections in Denmark, Finland, elsewhere in Europe, and for the EU elections in May.

“Stefan Löfven’s government will protect democracy and take Sweden forward.”
