Progressive European ministers call for a Europe with strong social rights

After the meeting, German Minister for Europe and newly appointed Chair of the PES GAC Ministers’ Network Michael Roth, said:

“Making Europe more progressive is our key priority. To this end, I warmly welcome the Commission’s proposal to strengthen social rights in Europe. A more social Europe is the right way forward to make it a fairer and better place for all. Social protection must be extended to all forms of employment. We must monitor the Commission’s proposal to make sure that there are concrete achievements on the social agenda, so we can have an EU with a social triple A. We will push for the social agenda ahead of the social summit in Goteborg, called by Swedish PM Stefan Löfven for this fall.”

Progressive ministers assessed the latest political developments, after the GAC council, such as the authoritarian trend in Turkey and their support of Emmanuel Macron in France against the candidate of the extreme right Marine Le Pen.

Michael Roth, said:

“There’s no way around it, the Brexit negotiations will be hard, but we the EU27 is united and ready to begin. We have set the pace.”
